Ryvolová, Karolína

Karolína Ryvolová, a graduate of Anglo-American Studies and Romani Studies at Charles University's Faculty of Arts, works as an editor, translator and journalist (Respekt, Host, Plav, A2, A2larm, etc.).

She translates fiction and non-fiction from English and Romani. From English, she has translated, for example, the novel Goddam Gypsy by the Canadian Romani writer Ronald Lee (Mizernej cigoš, Signeta ,2009), the novel American Gypsy by Armenian-Romani American Oksana Marafioti (Žij tam, kde jsou písně, Triton, 2019), and Moxie by young-adult fiction writer Jennifer Mathieu from the US (Ranařky, Paseka, 2019). She has co-edited two books, Andrej Giňa’s collected works (Paťiv: Ještě víme, co je úcta, with Helena Sadílková, Triáda, 2013) and a collection of Romani women’s prose Slunce zapadá už ráno (with Lukáš Houdek, Knihovna Václava Havla, 2014). She is the author of the first monograph on Romani literary history in the Czech Republic, Špačkem tužky na manžetě (Slovo 21 z.s. 2021).

For the Kher publishing house, she has translated five short stories by Ilona Ferková from Romani (Ještě jedno, Lído: Kaštánkovy příběhy z herny, Kher, 2018), short stories by Romani authors in the anthology O mulo! (Kher 2019) and in the diptych Všude samá krása a Samet blues (Kher 2021), as well as two titles for children and young adults, Květoslava Podhradská's autobiography (Povídání u povidel, Kher, 2022) and a young-adult novel by Ilona Ferková (AMEN, Kher, 2023). She has also translated a novel by Gary G. Steele, a Romani author from the USA, from English (Čhávata z manéže, Kher, 2022).
