Canadian author Ronald Lee sought to portray the Romani people and other characters who were part of the natural milieu of Montreal’s 1960s underground scene. This is where Old Demitro comes from—a respected Romani leader, bewildered by the rapid changes in society and striving to prepare his people for the future. Kolja tries to hold on to his traditions and craft, which are threatened by rapid technological development. Yanko was born in Canada and longs to have his abilities recognized in an uncomprehending and hostile world. There is also Marie, a female heroine embodying beauty, excitement and exoticism.
Goddam Gypsy was first published by Tundra Books in 1971 and later saw several reprints and translations into other languages.
